When Can You See Whales?

Migration during the spring and winter generally takes place between mid-December and April. Gray whales make the journey from Alaska to California, and females give birth during this time. After spending some time in the warm waters, they make the journey back north.

There is another migration period from mid-June through September. This is when blue whales make their way to the California coast.

What to Know about the California Refuge

It only takes about 20 minutes to drive from our downtown hotel to the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Regure in Chula Vista. This California wildlife refuge is comprised of over 2,600 acres of land and water in and around the bay. 

The natural attraction features two units: Sweetwater Marsh and South San Diego Bay. The first was established on the bay’s east side in 1988 and is roughly 316 acres. The second unit was dedicated in 1999 and is around 2,300 acres. The refuge as a whole protects migratory, endangered, native, and threatened species and their habitats. 

If you want to visit the Sweetwater Marsh Unit, head to the Living Coast Discover Center and board the shuttle that’ll bring you to the refuge gates. The shuttle runs approximately every 15 minutes, and this unit is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The other area is open from sunrise to sunset. 

What to Do on Your Visit

There’s a reason this place is a nature lover’s paradise. There is no shortage of things to do during your visit that will surround you with breathtaking scenery.

Los Peñasquitos translates to “little cliffs” in English. Situated between Sorrento Hills in the north and Mira Mesa in the south, Los Peñasquitos Canyon is renowned for its natural beauty. Participants in this year’s Parade of Lights will decorate their boats to the theme: Comic-Con on the Bay. This year, for the 4th time in its 48 years, the parade will pause at the pier off of Cesar Chavez Park. This is the perfect place for the boats to float so spectators can get a closer look. More than 350 plant species thrive in the manicured landscape, each having been carefully selected and nurtured by renowned botanist Kate Sessions. Seadragons & Seahorses boasts one of the most expansive seadragon habitats in the world, holding enough water to fill 70 bathtubs! With eight miles of trails, you choose your adventure, selecting the Beach Trail to scramble down to the practically private stretch of sand below. Bodysurfing is the sport, and San Diego is playing host to the 43rd annual Bodysurfing World Championships this month. Beginning at 6:30 am August 17th and 18th, just off Oceanside Pier, you can watch 350-400 bodysurfers from around the world compete (in their respective age divisions) for trophies and prizes. Winners will be announced Sunday afternoon after the final heat. Propped on the side of a hill above Scripps Pier, by the University of California San Diego, is a set of hidden swings with a spectacular ocean view. 

Here's how to get there to the La Jolla "secret swings." Beginning at Birch Aquarium, walk to the back of the parking lot in the opposite direction from the aquarium entrance. (Yes, the aquarium is worth a visit after the swings!) Look for a small, rather non-descript trail marker. Cross over a small footbridge and follow the path up. It’s a short trek that curves left just before reaching the top, and trust us when we say it's picture-worthy! Get some wind in your hair, a sparkling view through your shades, and check this well-kept secret off of your bucket list.

Since 1989, the vintage-style orange and green trolleys have taken tourists along a 25-mile loop with visits in 10 neighborhoods at 10 destinations, giving riders a variety of sights and sounds all to the tune of a conductor's narration.

Winter is the time when an estimated 20,000 gray whales swim through the waters off of the San Diego coast, from the Bering Sea to the shores of Baja, California.
